2024 Lanterman research Internship Program

Applications are open for the 2024 Research Internship program.

The Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation is seeking applicants for its “Research Internship Program”.   This program is an intensive four-week internship for high school students interested in preserving local history.   The program will run from June 4 through June 27 and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2pm to 4pm at the Lanterman House. There will be a small amount of homework, and interns can expect to complete approximately 20 volunteer hours.

The focus of this year’s internship program will be “Then and Now”. Interns will identify, research, and photograph historic sites in the La Canada Valley. They will create a webpage and short videos about the history of the sites. Additionally, interns may write short local history articles for publication.

Mary Lou Langedyke, President of the Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation Board and retired LCHS History teacher, will lead the internship program, with assistance from Laura Verlaque, Executive Director of the Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation and Julie Yamashita, Lanterman House Archivist.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Interns must live in the Crescenta Cañada Valley or attend a high school in the 91011 zip code.

  • Open to students entering 10th through 12th grade only.

  • Interns must attend all of the meetings.  The meetings (dates below) are mandatory.

    • June 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, and 27, from 2pm to 4pm at the Lanterman House.

  • Interns must be able to turn in documents and photos digitally, and print documents. A personal laptop is useful, but not required.

  • Interns must deliver their work by August 1, 2024 to receive a certificate of participation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: What if I can’t attend all the training meetings?

A: Please check the schedule carefully.  The meetings are mandatory.  If you have a regular conflict with the meeting dates, then this is not an appropriate internship for you.

Q: Will there be homework?

A: There may be a small amount of homework. You will write the article on your own time. We estimate it will take no more than four hours.

Q: What if I don’t finish the program or complete the work?

A: If the project is not completed, then we will remove you from the program.

Q: How many hours will the internship take?

A: We estimate the internship will take about 20 hours to complete.  We will provide a service log for you to fill out and sign off on all your hours.

Q: How many interns will you accept to the program?

A: We are capping the acceptances at 4, as we believe a small intern class size will be the most productive.

Q: If I previously interned at the Lanterman House, may I apply again?

A: We give priority to first-time applicants. However, we may be able to find another project for alumni of the internship program to work on - please reach out via email and ask. Previous alumni have helped out in the archives, with social media, and with local history articles.
